Being part of the Eaton Neston estate meant we had an incredible landscape around us, but Claire and Tom weren’t particularly interested in spending ages having their photographs taken. They wanted to enjoy their day, spend time with their family and get to the pub for lunch. And who could blame them?
That’s one of the things I love about documentary wedding photography. There doesn’t need to be a long list of photographs or hours spent posing for the camera. We kept things simple, natural and unhurried — giving Claire and Tom some beautiful photographs while allowing them to spend their New Year’s Eve doing what mattered most: being together with their family.
It was a lovely family, too, who made me feel completely at home. While I always remind myself that I’m there to work, some families make that job particularly easy. When people are relaxed, welcoming and genuinely engaged with you, it allows you to become part of the occasion without ever getting in the way of it. And, if I’m honest, I find those moments quite emotional.
There is a saying that the older the church, the harder the photographer has to work — constantly searching for the light, the angles and those little pockets of space from which to tell the story. Thankfully, St Mary the Virgin Church in Eaton Neston is beautifully maintained and wonderfully lit, making my job considerably easier.
